Mummenschanz brings ‘the language of no language’ to Macky Nov. 7

Renowned Swiss visual-theater troupe to make Boulder debut

For more than 40 years, the one-of-a-kind Swiss, language-free visual-theater troupe has been entertaining audiences all over the world with its quirky blend of puppetry, real-world props, humor and drama.

But when Mummenschanz takes the Nov. 8 at Macky Auditorium as part of CU Presents’ Artist Series, it will be the troupe’s first visit to Boulder.

“(Mummenschanz) was founded in 1972 … and we had our first major success at the Avignon Festival in France,” says founder Floriana Frassetto. “We never thought we’d be as successful as we still currently are.”*

Perhaps more than any other 2014-15 Artist Series program, Mummenschanz will appeal to families and multiple generations.

“I love that it is ‘language-free’ and intuitive,” says Joan McLean Braun, executive director of CU Presents. “It’s lively, visual humor that speaks to the human experience and appeals to all ages, spanning cultures and languages.”

The troupe will perform its 40th-anniversary celebration show when it comes to Boulder. The first part of the show will reflect Mummenschanz shows of the 1970s, the second half focuses on the more abstract period from the 1980s to 2000 and the final act will include the kind of marionette work that has brought the company into the 21stcentury.

“The show features 30 of the best sketches we’ve made,” says Frassetto, who recommends the show for anyone 6 or older. “There are oohs and aahs and laughter and applause.”
